Dr Rao's thorough and well-founded knowledge of his country will be crucial in combatting VAD in India, the country most affected by the lack of provitamin A and other micronutirents in the people's diet.

Dr SR Rao is Director in charge of Infrastructure at the Dept of Biotechnology of India and has taken up the task of building the Indian Golden Rice Product Development Group.
